Gregory Afoko’s case was just an injustice—Kpebu

-

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu believes that Gregory Afoko’s case was an injustice.

He is of the view that the former president dealt with him because of his long-standing “beef” with Paul Afoko who is a former chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Accra-based TV3 on Saturday, February 22, 2025, Martin Kpebu said “This is great news”.

“The judiciary is suffering too much from political interference, President’s interference in the judiciary is not on, that is not democracy.

“This Gregory Afoko’s case was injustice, just because Akufo-Addo had problems with Paul Afoko, Gregory.”

Afoko’s Bail

The High Court has granted bail to Gregory Afoko, who has been accused of conspiring with the convicted Asabke Alangdi to murder the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.

The court granted Afoko bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified.

Afoko was accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi, who has since been convicted, in the 2015 acid attack that led to Mahama’s death.

His bail comes after numerous failed attempts over the years.

Brief Facts of the Case

According to court documents, on May 14, 2015, Gregory’s brother, Paul Afoko, then National Chairman of the NPP, and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, travelled to Bolgatanga for a meeting, which was violently disrupted by thugs allegedly organised by Adams Mahama. The attack was reportedly due to Afoko and Agyepong’s campaign against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and for failing to inform Mahama about the meeting.

Following the incident, the prosecution alleged that Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi formed a youth group to protect those seen as opposing Akufo-Addo. On May 20, 2015, the two reportedly ambushed Mahama at his residence and doused him with a substance suspected to be acid.

Mahama, who was attacked while seated in his pickup truck, sustained severe burns. His wife, Hajia Zenabu Adams, who rushed to his aid, also suffered burns during the rescue. Before his death, Mahama reportedly named Gregory Afoko and Asabke as his attackers.

Mahama succumbed to his injuries while being airlifted to Accra for treatment. A post-mortem revealed he died from shock due to extensive acid burns.

Gregory Afoko was later arrested and led police to Asabke’s father’s house. However, Asabke had fled with his wife, leaving behind their baby.

The case, which has dragged on for nearly a decade, has seen numerous legal twists, making the court’s decision to grant Gregory Afoko bail a significant turn in the long-standing legal battle.
