Former Attorney General Martin Amidu has taken a direct swipe at President John Mahama, urging him to move beyond political rhetoric and take decisive action in addressing Ghana’s economic challenges in an open letter available to MyNewsGH.
Reacting to Mahama’s recent description of Ghana as an “economic crime scene”, Amidu questioned what the opposition NDC and its parliamentary minority did to prevent the country from reaching this state before January 2025.
“Every new government since 2001 has used this same ‘economic crime scene’ excuse,” Amidu argued. “Kufuor said it, Mills and Mahama said it in 2009, and Akufo-Addo repeated it in 2017.
“Now, here we are again.” He warned that such rhetoric could be laying the groundwork for another HIPC bailout or a massive China loan, tactics both the NPP and NDC have relied on under the 1992 Constitution.
Amidu also expressed concern over what he called a growing “political crime scene” under Mahama’s watch, questioning whether he would be firm enough to tackle corruption within his own administration.
“The electorate did not vote for excuses, Mr. President. We voted for firm and impartial leadership, not more worn-out rhetoric,”* he stated.
Cautioning Mahama against surrounding himself with sycophants, Amidu reminded him of Cadman Mills’ earlier warning about blind loyalty, which was met with fierce resistance.
“I have a vested interest in your success. You must not fail again and send the NDC into opposition come 2028. Walk your pre-election can-do talk!”* he urged.
