Real Betis faced a defeat in the UEFA Conference League final, as Chelsea netted four goals in the second half, securing a 4-1 victory in Poland.
Real Betis started off their match with a dream goal just nine minutes in. Manuel Pellegrini’s team showed great confidence against their Premier League rivals, and their efforts were rewarded with an early goal. After regaining possession, Isco passed the ball to Ez Abde, who scored past the former Villarreal goalkeeper, Filip Jorgensen.
This was an ideal beginning for Betis, and it could have been even more promising. Marc Bartra was thwarted by a solid save from Jorgensen, while Johnny Cardoso missed a good opportunity after being assisted by Abde. Ultimately, they paid the price for not doubling their lead in the first half.
Just after the hour mark, Chelsea found the equalizer they had been pushing for during the first 20 minutes of the second half. A brilliant cross from Cole Palmer reached Enzo Fernandez, who scored effortlessly from close range.
Five minutes later, Chelsea completed their comeback. Palmer was again pivotal in the play, skillfully maneuvering past Romaine Perraud before sending in another cross for Nicolas Jackson, who also has ties to Villarreal, to find the net.
From that point on, Betis were on the back foot, and they were punished for a blunder by Youssef Sabaly, which allowed Jadon Sancho to curl in Chelsea’s third goal in the 83rd minute. The London side added to their tally in stoppage time when Moises Caicedo scored with a deflected shot, making it 4-1.
A three-goal loss feels harsh for Betis, who performed admirably throughout their UEFA Conference League journey. Although they missed out this time, there will undoubtedly be future opportunities for them to claim a European trophy.
