We were disrespected” – Midwives Association distances itself from GRNMA strike

Leticia Asaba Atiah, the President of the National Association of Registered Midwives (NARM) Ghana, has pointed out that “disrespect” is one of the key reasons for the Association’s decision to refrain from joining the ongoing strike initiated by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, June 8, 2025, she mentioned that the proper procedures were not adhered to when the current strike was declared.

Leticia Atiah elaborated that after multiple discussions involving the Health Minister and the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, along with NARM – Ghana and two other unions, a meeting with the finance minister was set for June 18, 2025, which was agreed upon by all four unions.

The aim of this meeting was to tackle the issues and requests put forth by the registered nurses and midwives, as well as to ensure the government follows through on the Collective Agreement that was signed in November 2024.

Nevertheless, Leticia pointed out that GRNMA convened an emergency meeting with the three other unions, indicating that after consulting with their National Executive Committee, they have decided to proceed with a strike action.
