Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has lamented what he describes as a longstanding campaign of hate against Dr. J.B. Danquah and his political tradition, stating that it has persisted for decades despite the contributions of Danquah and his followers to Ghana’s progress.
Speaking at a memorial service marking the 60th anniversary of Danquah’s passing at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi, Eastern Region, Afenyo-Markin expressed disappointment that this negative narrative continues to thrive, fueled by individuals who should know better.
“Sadly, this old hate campaign is still with us today, fed daily with oxygen by those who should know better. Indeed, I dare say that, perhaps since the 1940s, no group of people have suffered a hate campaign as enduring as that which Danquah and his people have had to go through,” he remarked.
He emphasized Danquah’s contributions to public service and national development, noting that despite their sacrifices, he and his political lineage continue to face unwarranted criticism.
“A people who have contributed so much to public service and the betterment of our nation and yet maligned beyond measure for sacrifices that are pure and patriotic,” he added.
The remarks have reignited discussions on the historical and political legacy of J.B. Danquah, one of the leading figures in Ghana’s independence struggle, and the impact of partisan narratives on national history.
