Mawutor Agbavitor, the Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently addressed party members and executives, urging them to temper their expectations regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Agbavitor’s comments came during the President’s thank-you tour of the region, where Mahama was expressing his gratitude to the people of Volta for their overwhelming support during the 2024 elections.
Speaking at the event, Agbavitor reassured the people of the region that the future remained bright, stating confidently, “The sun will surely shine high on the Volta Region.”
He thanked the President for his key appointments and the opportunities afforded to the region’s sons and daughters, emphasizing that the region had a promising future under Mahama’s leadership.
President Mahama embarked on this thank-you tour to personally express his gratitude to the people of the Volta Region for their resounding support, which was instrumental in securing his re-election. Mahama acknowledged the critical role the Volta Region played in his electoral victory, describing it as a “beacon of democracy” and a “cornerstone of the NDC.”
The region’s loyalty to the party was evident in the high voter turnout, with overwhelming support that helped solidify the NDC’s position in the 2024 general election.
During the tour, the President made it clear that his leadership was grounded in a commitment to competence, and all appointments made were based on the ability of individuals to deliver results.
He also highlighted specific appointments such as that of Madam Dzifa Abla Gomashie as Minister of Tourism, emphasizing her role in developing the region’s rich tourism potential.
The region’s tourism sector holds significant promise, and Mahama’s appointment of a qualified individual to lead it was aimed at tapping into this opportunity for economic growth.
Similarly, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza was appointed Minister of Roads and Highways, with a clear mandate to improve the quality and maintenance of road infrastructure in the region.
Agbavitor continued to express optimism about the future of the Volta Region under President Mahama’s leadership, noting that the region had made great strides in the 2024 elections.
The region recorded a remarkable 90.11 percent voter turnout in favor of the NDC, which enabled the party to reclaim the Hohoe seat and win all parliamentary seats in the region.
This success was significant not only because of the high level of support but also because it represented a 48 percent reduction in the influence of opposing parties.
Agbavitor highlighted this shift as a testament to the strength and unity of the NDC in the Volta Region, and he expressed confidence that, with Mahama’s leadership and the implementation of the “Resetting Ghana Agenda,” this margin of victory could continue to grow.
He optimistically projected that in future elections, the influence of opposing parties in the region could shrink even further, potentially reaching single-digit levels.
Despite the successes achieved so far, Agbavitor emphasized that the region remained open to more opportunities for appointments in the years ahead.
He stressed that the Volta Region should not rest on its laurels but continue to push for further inclusion in key government positions.
This openness to more appointments was seen as a way for the region to continue contributing to national development, ensuring that the voices of the people were represented at all levels of governance.
The President’s thank-you tour also garnered support from local leadership. Togbe Patamia Dzekle VII, the Paramount Chief of Bator and Vice President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, publicly pledged the support of the chiefs for President Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda.”
Togbe Dzekle reminded the President of the promises he had made during his campaign and called on him to fulfill those promises.
He emphasized the importance of the chiefs’ support in helping the President achieve his goals, signaling that traditional leadership was united in its backing of the administration’s plans for national development.
Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, also expressed his gratitude to President Mahama for his prompt ministerial appointments.
He stressed the need for the President to focus on resolving key issues facing the region, including water challenges in Ho and the poor state of the region’s roads.
These issues have been long-standing concerns for residents of the Volta Region, and the local leadership was eager to see tangible progress in addressing them.
Afede’s remarks underscored the importance of prioritizing infrastructure improvements to enhance the quality of life for the people in the region.
Rev. Seth Mawutor, the Chairman of the Christian Episcopal Association in the Volta Region, urged the people to remain patient and offer their prayers for the President’s success.
He reminded the community that the challenges ahead were significant and that collective support was essential for the President to fulfill his promises.
Rev. Mawutor’s call for unity and perseverance emphasized that the road to national development would require the collaboration of all sectors of society.
In conclusion, President Mahama’s thank-you tour of the Volta Region served as a reaffirmation of his commitment to the people who played a pivotal role in his re-election.
His focus on appointing capable individuals to key roles and his emphasis on regional development highlighted his dedication to addressing the needs of the Volta Region.
While local leaders expressed gratitude for the President’s swift actions, they also urged him to prioritize critical issues such as infrastructure and access to services.
The tour not only strengthened the President’s relationship with the Volta Region but also reinforced the importance of unity, patience, and collective effort as Ghana works toward fulfilling its aspirations for growth and prosperity.
