Gov’t to build modern markets nationwide in support of 24-hour economy

The Minister for Local Government, Sanitation, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has revealed plans to construct modern markets nationwide to bolster the 24-hour economy initiative.

He stated that each district will be tasked with establishing a modern market to boost commercial activities.

During a speech in Parliament on Thursday, Ahmed Ibrahim voiced his confidence in the viability of the 24-hour economy.

“In every district, we are pinpointing the commercial centers. Once this is accomplished, we can allocate 25% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), amounting to GHC 24 million annually, to develop these commercial hubs.

“The strategy also involves constructing schools nearby so that farmers can ensure their children receive an education while they work in the markets. Additionally, there will be fire and police posts to address emergencies like fires or theft. Our commitment to the 24-hour economy extends beyond merely providing electricity,” he remarked.

In the meantime, President John Dramani Mahama has declared that the policy, which the government has labeled a game changer, is set to launch on July 1.

The 24-Hour Economy Policy, a key initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under former flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, is designed to keep the nation’s economy operational around the clock, emphasizing production, service delivery, agriculture, and manufacturing.
