The Government of Ghana has revealed its intention to evacuate citizens from Iran due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared this news through a social media update on Monday, June 16, emphasizing that the safety of Ghanaian lives is the main reason for this action.
“The Mahama Administration has decided to promptly evacuate Ghanaians residing in Iran, prioritizing their safety in light of the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa mentioned.
He also disclosed that Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down immediately to ensure the safety of its diplomatic personnel.
The evacuation will be conducted through Iran’s land borders and will include all Ghanaian nationals in the region—diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents alike.
Mr. Ablakwa reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding every Ghanaian, no matter where they are located.
He added that the government is vigilantly observing the situation in Israel and will offer further guidance as necessary.
“In the meantime, we have directed that embassy functions in Tel Aviv be minimized, and all Ghanaians in Israel should keep in close contact with our consular office,” he stated.
The Minister wrapped up by reaffirming Ghana’s appeal for diplomatic solutions, urging both countries to cease hostilities and focus on a peaceful resolution.
