Nigerian hip-hop musician remanded in prison over naira abuse

Nigerian hip-hop singer, Terry Alexander Ejeh popularly known as “Terry Apala” has been remanded in Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos State, a report by Sahara Reporters says.

Apala was said to have been arraigned before Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Ikeja on Friday, April 25, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of naira abuse.

The singer will remain at the centre until his bail application is heard, determined and possibly perfected if granted by the court.

Apala is facing a one-count charge levelled against him by the EFCC for stepping on the naira notes whilst dancing during a social event at the Madison Place, Oniru, Lagos Island.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. However, the EFCC’s counsel, Sulaimon Sulaiman, said the singer had a pending charge him and requested the court to announce a trial date.

Sulaiman also asked that Apala be remanded in custody.

To this counsel to the singer, Felix Nwakbudu informed the court of a pending bail application filed on behalf of of his client.

The judge further ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of the his bail application.

He also adjourned the matter to May 5, 2025 for trial.
