FG Slams N628m Fine on DisCos for Flouting Billing Rules

-

The Federal Government has imposed a fine of over N628 million on eight Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) for breaching billing regulations related to unmetered customers.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), in a statement released Thursday, disclosed that the penalties were issued for violations that occurred between July and September 2024.

The affected DisCos include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.

According to the commission, the sanctioned companies failed to comply with prescribed monthly energy caps set for unmetered customers, a key component of efforts to curb estimated billing.

“Pursuant to Section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023 (‘EA 2023’), the commission has sanctioned eight (8) Electricity Distribution Companies (‘DisCos’) – Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola, for failing to fully comply with the monthly energy caps issued by the commission between July – September 2024 (2024/Q3),” the statement read.

NERC further directed that the DisCos must provide credit adjustments to all affected customers no later than May 15, 2025, in accordance with regulatory requirements.

The regulatory body said the sanctions are intended to reinforce compliance and uphold consumer protection standards in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
